New members can be sure of a warm welcome and opportunities to play and improve whatever your standard if you’d like to come to our club.

If you come along, please be sure to let people know you’re new – we often have players from other clubs attending league matches and it helps us to know you’re here for our club, rather than an opposing player!

Who we are

Letchworth & Hitchin is a thriving club which commenced in the 1960’s. We currently meet at The Settlement, in Nevells Road, Letchworth, on a Monday Evening 7.45 – 10.45 during the chess season – typically September to May. Car parking at the settlement is free to chess club users.

Our room at is excellent for playing chess , cupboards for storage of equipment on site and ready access to kitchen facilities.

The club field teams in leagues and knock-out competitions run by the Hertfordshire Chess Association (HCA). Our 6 (4 in the Herts County league and 2 in the Herts Under 1600 divisions). Teams are selected towards the commencement of each season based on playing strength. Members are welcome to join the club and only participate in club competitions. Members of the Letchworth Junior Chess and Go club are automatically members of the L&H club and eligible to play for club sides (subject to safeguarding conditions).
